Shy Beauty

photoThalictrum are one of the delights of the late summer garden.

Thalictrum literally means, to flourish, and long ago babies were placed on pillows filled with this lovely plant to ensure their survival.

My plants keep seeding themselves thither and yon, and I keep digging them up and re-planting them in groups. Thalictrum look best in massed plantings because of their airy, see-through blooms and tall, spindly aspect.

A strong thunderstorm can snap their brittle stems and spoil the blooms, but Thalictrum is otherwise a graceful addition to any woodland garden.

Sometimes in the garden, it’s the shy ones that reward you when you stop and really look.
