Fibonacci’s been at work in my garden again

What makes a face or flower deeply satisfying or even flawless?photo

                                  Proportion.

There are known, measurable ratios for the distance between chin and mouth, nose and forehead, which, if exceeded, make us view a face as awkward—or even ugly.

In nature, as Leonardo Fabonacci pointed out, there are also certain proportions that repeat and are very pleasing and satisfying to us.photo

Phyllotaxis refers to the order of the leaves on a plant’s stem.  That order is based not on whimsy but on careful maximization of available sunlight, given that plant’s height and individual leaf size.  A fuller definition, should that interest you, is given here.

Otherwise, just enjoy these examples of the precision with which Nature creates total abandon.

I know I do.
